So I’m looking to add some storage space to my garage with some cabinets. Anyone have any recommendations? I definitely don’t want plastic. Is MDF ok? They look the best to me, but I know metal ones will last longer. I want 2 tall cabinets like the picture below (I already have a workbench).

If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, I’d build above-ground cabinets.

Do you live near a college? Try to get a couple of used wardrobes and add shelves.

Keep in mind that if MDF gets wet it will swell up and fall apart; depending on your area/garage it may not be an issue, in which case go for it. Metal is definitely the longest-lasting solution.

In any case I strongly suggest keeping them up off the ground a little bit, such as in the picture with those legs (though I’d put some sort of skirt on the front so EVERY BOLT doesn’t roll under there).

Free cabinets are best.

Or if you can find the metal old ones on a Craigslist.

Unless you want it to match. Any storage is good. I have metal old ones, I also got some MDF from a demo house that need to be put up.

IKEA kitchen units. Seriously. Easy clean, stain proof, modular, variety of widths heights depths colours, soft close weight bearing drawers, lots of made to measure organisers, inserts and lighting, good hinges.

You can probably even find a decent full kitchen on eBay local to you for not a lot.

An alternative is to get industrial shelving An old department shore was going out of business and for $@100 got 8 heavy duty metal shelves.

Shelves are definitely cheaper. I prefer the cleaner look of cabinets though. Plus everything doesn’t get covered in dust.

MDF is fine as long as you keep them dry, and don't beat the shit out of them.

Literally just for storing things. I figure as long as the cabinets are off the floor they should be fine? The couple of metal cabinets I like have bad reviews due to poor packaging and shipping damage.

MDF is ok unless you plan on storing heavy things (like tools) for long periods, MDF will start to bend under weight.

MDF is OK for some small furniture and as a work surface if treated and supported well. I’m no carpenter, this is just what I’ve gathered when reading about woods and the like.

Should be fine then. The shelves will bow over time if you store very heavy things in them.
